Candles are often marketed as symbols of calm, comfort, and self-care. Yet many commercially produced candles are designed with efficiency and scale in mind, rather than how they behave when burned regularly in a home.

Understanding how mass-produced candles are made helps explain why some feel overpowering, smoky, or uncomfortable over time.

Why paraffin wax dominates the market

Most high-street candles are made from paraffin wax, a petroleum by-product refined from crude oil. Paraffin is widely used because it is inexpensive, easy to work with, and capable of holding strong fragrance. For large manufacturers, it offers consistency and speed.

From a home-use perspective, however, paraffin has drawbacks. When burned, paraffin candles can release soot and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the air. Research published in journals such as Environmental Science & Technology has shown that candle emissions vary significantly depending on wax type, wick choice, and burn conditions.

While occasional use is unlikely to cause harm for most people, frequent burning especially in enclosed spaces can contribute to heavier-feeling air, visible soot, and discomfort for those who are sensitive to fragrance or airborne particles.

The issue with overpowering scent

Many commercial candles are designed to smell strong almost immediately. This is achieved through high fragrance loads and scent blends engineered for projection rather than subtlety.

In a retail setting, strong scent sells. In a home, especially in the evening, it can feel overwhelming. Rather than supporting relaxation, intense synthetic fragrance can overstimulate the senses and work against the very calm the candle is meant to create.

Candles made with a more balanced approach to scent release tend to build gradually, creating atmosphere rather than demanding attention.

Burn quality and longevity

Another common issue with mass-produced candles is burn performance. Candles designed for quick turnover often burn faster, tunnel more easily, and produce excess smoke.

A well-made candle is formulated to burn slowly and evenly. Rather than delivering instant impact, it becomes something you can return to daily part of a rhythm, not a novelty.

Choosing artisan candles designed for slower burns is less about luxury and more about practicality, comfort, and consistency.
